AGM Feedback

FCDEC Families,

We had a fantastic Annual General Meeting (AGM) last Thursday and accomplished everything we needed to accomplish in ~90 minutes.  We will shortly post the “official” draft minutes on the web site, although they will not be finalized/approved until next AGM.  Here are the highlights:

1.  Attendance.  We had 78 member votes represented, an excellent turnout by historical standards.  We reviewed the budget and completed the required reports and administrative items.  All completed in~90 minutes.  We also passed out free stuff!

2.  By-Laws.   Only one of the three By-Law amendments passed (we deleted the newsletter requirement for the Secretary now that we have social media and a web page).  Second, the motion to change Board position voting to a direct vote for key Board positions did not secure the required 2/3 majority.  Third, the motion to reduce the number of Recreation/Camp Directors from two to one was tabled until the September STARS/Academy/YDP Committee proffers a recommendation.

3.  Purchases.  The Board was authorized to obligate up to $15,000 for the purchase of portable lighting.  Currently we spend $5000 in rentals each year.  The research, recommendation, and actual costing must still be completed and reviewed by the Board before any execution.

4.  The Board.  It was tremendous that we had more volunteers than positions for the Board.  We should all be proud in these volunteers and offer a huge thanks to all those who stood to serve.  The new Board members are:

Shannon Hickman
Jacki Moriarty
Christi Moore
Jenna McGinnis
Dave Feathers
Sean LaGarde

The following Board members were retained or are in the second year of their term:

Vic Makela
Renee Ramirez
Carrie Ely
Kim Knight
Dawn Walker
Terri O’Neil
Becky Brothers

*The new Board will meet on September 4th, 6pm (tentatively scheduled at Comfort Suites in Niceville) to assign Board positions.  No other major agenda items scheduled at this time.

5.  The Fall season.  Coach DeVito, Coach Brown, the great coaching staff, and our team managers are doing a first-class job of executing the Fall schedule and the training plan.  Most all of our teams completed a tournament by now and as expected we have won some titles and seen some bad losses too.  The challenges, strengths, and weaknesses for each team and each player will come to light during this part of the season.  As parents, it is great to unleash a week of office or home stress by cheering on our progeny on the pitch, but do not be distracted by the bright and shiny medals.  Tournaments are necessary, but limited tools; the most meaningful work is done on the practice field, in the weight room, and in the front yard.  In discussing the DOC/DJPD coaching plan and watching this coaching staff in action, there is no doubt in my mind…. those who commit will flourish and maximize their potential within this system.  There is a broad range of objectives in each Club generally divided by age and stage.  As parents, I encourage you to attend practices, talk to the coach on individual player development plans, and follow up to make sure the soccer homework is getting done.  Just like in school, parents, coaches, managers/support staff, and players must work together to assess, motivate, adjust, and stay focused.  Of course, formal player assessments and evaluations will be provided  to you after each season, but please do not be afraid to talk or email the coach (just not right before or during practice) so he can collaborate with you on making this Club a productive and positive experience for your child.  These coaches were hired on this staff because of their attitude and character, they thrive on motivated players and positive, engaged parents.

With the fieldwork being handled so ably by the staff, the Board is working on the day-to-day administrative support and initiating strategic projects.  We will be working on the plan to design, fund, and build new fields (Heroes Field Committee).  Also, we will be designing our recreation and youth development programs down to U6 (STARS/YDP Committee).  All these efforts are kicking off in September.  Additionally, I think we need to launch a sponsorship effort, decide whether to invest in field lights and, by the way, we have the Destin Soccer Rodeo to put on so we can bring vital resources into the Club.  The AGM is past, but we have more work to do and there is a place for you.

“We must give more in order to get more. It is the generous giving of ourselves that produces the generous harvest.” Orison Swett Marden  Be Blessed,

Vic Makela Acting President FCDEC

Interesting Note:  We are spreading out our reach.  The new Board has members from Niceville, Destin, Navarre, Crestview, FWB, and Crestview .  The overall breakdown of members geographically (290) is:  Anadalusia-9, Crestview-52, Destin-32, Dupont, WA-2, Eglin-3, FWB-42, Freeport-9, Gulf Breeze-1, Holt-5, Hurlburt-6, Mary Esther-10, Miramar-9, Navarre-13, Niceville-97
