Baseball is just around the corner, and we are excited to announce that the tryout schedule for our 2020 Select Baseball Teams will be on January 4th & 5th. This competitive baseball division was created to provide baseball players with the opportunity to advance to a more competitive game, while still playing for the community they live in. GBYBS was a leader in the Northern Oregon Cal Ripken organization initiating select teams three years ago. Now, we are seeing nearly every program in our area having at least one select team, many holding tryouts as early as September & October. 

 

This year, we are expanding our select program to FIVE teams, ranging from 9u to 14u and will have several returning head coaches. Tryouts are led by our HS Liaison board member, Gabe Shields ([email protected]), who is an assistant baseball coach at Gresham HS. He will have 2-3 additional HS coaches on the evaluation team to ensure we have an unbiased and knowledgeable team running the tryout process and selecting players for our teams. 

 

Select tryout check in will be held at PDX Eastside, a brand new baseball & softball training facility in Gresham (location change was made on Jan 1st). Players should arrive at the time listed below and will receive a tryout number, have a photo taken (for internal use only), try on jerseys for accurate sizing, and to participate in tryouts. All players should be dressed appropriately for baseball including pants and hat, as well as a protective cup and a water bottle.

We highly recommend attending both days of tryouts. Often, this is the first time in 6 months that a player has picked up a bat or glove, so the first day can be a bit rusty. By the second day, players are usually more comfortable with the process and are able to show their baseball knowledge and skills with less nerves. If your player is unable to attend either day - please let us know. We are working on an accommodation for this, which will depend on how many players and which ages will need it.

Interested players are encouraged to attend a winter workout or two with these coaches prior to tryouts to shake off the cobwebs! Our only request is that you PLEASE contact the coach ahead of time so he knows to expect your player and can adjust his practice plans for the session ahead of time.
