Rookie Division - 2019 Season

GBYBS Rookie Baseball

What is the Rookie Division?

The Rookie division provide recreational baseball for players age 7 & 8. At this level, players focus on hitting and fielding development through use of a pitching machine while at bat rather than coach or player pitching. Teams are formed based on the number of players registered, taking player and coach requests into account. See below for more information.

Advanced 8yr olds have the option of evaluating for the Minors Division. This requires registration and payment by February 9th along with attending evaluations on the 16th & 17th. 8 Year olds are not guaranteed to play in the Minors division. Any players not drafted to a Minors team will be placed on a farms team. Read more about Minors Division.

When is the deadline and how much does it cost?

The deadline to register online for the 2019 season is March 2nd. A 1wk grace period (with $25 late fee) is allowed. All players must register online. Registration cost is $100. An optional summer season will be available in June with an additional fee.

How are teams formed?

Teams are created by looking at player "buddy" requests, followed by coach requests. While it is not perfect, we have found thatour player agents do a great job balancing out the teams. We are always looking for more coaches! You can register to coach in the volunteer section during your player registration process.

When are games played?

Games are played on weeknights and Saturdays - 2 per week - at local fields. Some travel may be required to neighboring leagues in SE Portland and Sandy, based on interleague scheduling.

What is the league fundraisier this year?

All players must participate in or opt-out of league fundraising. This year, players and families will have several options to fundraise: Portland Pickles Tickets, Gresham Greywolves Tickets and the ever popular, hanging Flower Baskets with delivery prior to Mother's Day. Additional details will be available at the parents meeting the first week of March. League fees cover the cost of 1 jersey shirt, a hat and league games.

Are there boundary restrictions?

Most Cal Ripken players live or go to school within the Gresham / Barlow district. A player that lived within the boundary and moved out without a lapse in play with the league is eligible to remain with GBYBS. Players living in our neighboring districts not serviced by Babe Ruth / Cal Ripken, such as Reynolds, Corbett and Damascus can play with GBYBS as long as we are the closest Cal Ripken league.
